Lately, it seems there are a lot of “rescues” popping up all over the place.  I’ve seen postings on Facebook, Craigslist and other places.

Please be aware, that in the State of Georgia, to rescue and re-home parrots, dogs, cats, ferrets, any animal, you MUST be licensed.  The Department of Agriculture is the agency that issues licenses.  The license MUST be in sight at the facility whether it’s a home or a commercial facility.

If you need to relinquish your parrot, or any other animal, ASK to see the person’s license.  You can call the Department of Agriculture to ask if a “rescue” is licensed.  Anyone operating a rescue/re-homing facility without proper licensing is operating outside the law.  It also means they aren’t inspected or controlled in any way.

Please make sure about the place you are going to leave your parrot.  Don’t just take someone’s word for the fact they are licensed.  If they can’t show you a license, call the Department of Agriculture and ask about them BEFORE you leave your parrot.  Make sure you are placing your parrot into the best environment for them.  Make sure that the person or rescue you are leaving your parrot with will work to find the best home possible for your parrot.

Rescues charge adoption fees as a rule.  These fees help with food, toys, cages and vet care.  But, you want to make sure the person you leave your parrot with is not just selling parrots to anyone.  Rescues have a screening process that helps to ensure a successful placement.

Visit the rescue of your choice.  See how the place looks, do the parrots there have toys, appropriate food and not just seed, appropriate sized cages?  Do the parrots seem comfortable or afraid of the people?  You are trusting someone with a loved family member so take the time to check things out before you take your parrot.

How times flies!  We've been so busy lately with new birds, finding new homes and turning the garage into a bird room that's it's been unbelieveable.  The bird room is almost ready to go.
Since the Cockatoos will be moving to the new bird room, we
are going to convert the Cockatoo room into a quarantine room.
It will have separate air and heat and be closed off from the
other birds.  We've had to use the bedroom and computer room as
quarantine so this will be wonderful for both us and the birds.

The new bird room is possible with the help of Sponsorship from
Prilosec OTC and Dalton Carpet One,
 who donated the flooring.
Without them this wouldn't be possible.
Also the Smith family for their generous donation and continuing support, as well as the storage building that allowed us to empty the garage of spare cages, toy parts, etc.

Lately we've had some incredible birds come in and find
wonderful new homes.  People so excited to share their lives
with these magnificant creatures.

Today comes 5 parrots, 2 days ago came an incredible Moluccan Cockatoo.  My heart breaks at some of these birds.  I cry with the families that have no choice but to give up their birds.  I am angered beyond words at the people that abuse and neglect these wonderful and magnificent creatures.  I look into these eyes and my heart hurts.  I see their pain, their mistrust and I just want to take it all away.  How can anyone hurt such an intelligent, loving and amazing creature?

Thanks to the generous donations of some very special people and the hard work and planning by Pam and Dave, we have a new Van.

It's great to know there are such wonderful and caring people out there.
Dee's Haven is now back on the road!!

Our next goal is to build an outdoor storage building for spare cages, playstands and toys with a workshop for making toys.
We are going to then convert our 2 car garage into a special bird room with playstands and hanging playstands for the birds.

If you or someone you know can donate building materials like wood, windows, paint, etc., or a gift card to Lowe's or Home Depot we have volunteers for labor lined up already.
We can also use a few box type fans as well as a couple of indoor electric heaters.

Remember, all donations are tax deductible since we are a 501(c)(3).  What a great way to get a tax break for the coming year and help the parrots at Dee’s Haven at the same time!!  If you’d like to make a donation you can contact us at 706-599-5631 or 706-599-5634.   You can also mail a donation to: Dee’s Haven Parrot Rescue, P.O.
