Meet Our Flock

These birds came to us for one reason or another and needed new homes.  They are now permanent residents of Dee's Haven and in their forever homes.

Meet Morgan, female Umbrella Cockatoo, age approximately 8 years.

Morgan was our first.  She was not so much a rescue as we paid a small fee for her.  When Morgan came to live with us she could not be handled.  She was eating only a seed diet and plucking her feathers.  She didn't have her primary or secondary flight feathers or tail feathers.  She was very unbalanced and so she fell, a lot.  We spent the first 3 months at the vet almost weekly with broken blood feathers and trying to find out why Morgan was plucking.

After a few months I could handle Morgan and she has become the biggest snuggle bunny of all times.  She is very sweet and loves to be held.  We are working on a screaming issue now.

She has almost stopped plucking and is on a great diet of fresh fruits and veggies, pellets, still some seed mix, birdie bread and bird safe people food.
Morgan is also the "poster child" for Dee's Haven.

Introducing our Angel, a Moluccan Cockatoo, approximate age 12 years.

Angel is the most lovable bird.  She won't step up off her cage but loves to give kisses and lay her head on you.  When she goes to the floor and steps up, she loves to cuddle against your shoulder.

Angel is very happy now, on a great diet and gets very excited when we come home, calling to us, loudly.

She is getting some feathers back on her wings and back but it's doubtful she will regain feathers on her chest and legs.  Still, to us, she is a beautiful bird with a beautiful soul.

Meet Talus, a 10 year old Congo African Grey.

Talus came to us from a very loving family where he lived his whole life.  They were devistated about giving Talus up but with the change in situation, they did what they felt was best for Talus.

He is definitely a one person bird, and that person is not me.  Talus is very bonded to my husband, Jon.  He will fly around the house to find Jon if he's out and Jon leaves the room.

He is a talker and never just screams.  He tells you when he wants to go to bed and makes some of the cutest beeps and whistles ever.
Talus is very quiet and calm and loves eating dinner every night with us.  He and Jon share a plate.
We feel very lucky to have Talus in our family.

Our latest is a little Goffin Cockatoo named Jeebie.  He came to us with a very serious wound caused from an injury with a rope toy.  Without treatment his wound has become infected and it is quite serious.

We are seeing our wonderful vet and Jeebie is on antibiotics and pain medicine.  Despite having the injury, being rehomed, seeing vets and medication, he is a sweet and wonderful soul.  He is so friendly and loves to sit on your shoulder or just cuddle with you.

Jeebie had 2 toes amputated on April 2nd.

As you can tell from the picture, he is a very dirty little bird but we've been focusing on getting him better for now.  Soon, he'll have to have a bath to get all the dirt and newsprint off his beautiful feathers.  Jeebie will be a permanent resident of Dee's Haven.

May 27, 2009--Jeebie Update--Jeebie is still in his collar.  We've tried to take it off a couple of times, but he goes right for his foot.  He is finally off the antibiotics and we aren't having to bandage his foot.  Jeebie received a wonderful new toy from Parrot Island Toys.  They are great folks and made a special toy for Jeebie that stuck out enough he could reach it over his collar.  He is really enjoying being able to chew up that toy!!
Jeebie will go back to the vet next week to see how things are going.  We are hoping that his foot will finish healing so we can get him out of that collar.
June 16, 2009--Jeebie Update--Jeebie is still in his collar and taking his medicine.  He's in good spirits and loving chewing on anything we put in his cage to chew on.  We had to order new vine balls from Parrot Island Toys since Jeebie completely chewed up the toy they sent him.  He just loves it.  So now we need a non ending supply of popcycle sticks and vine balls!!!
September 24, 2009--Jeebie Update--Jeebie has been out of his collar almost 24 hours now.  So far, so good.  I am so excited!!  I hope that he will leave his foot alone now.  I held him almost all night last night so I would be close if something went wrong.

October 22, 2009--Jeebie Update--We could not have asked for a better outcome with Jeebie.  He's been out of his collar almost a month, he's leaving his foot alone, hollering like a Cockatoo should, playing, chewing up toys and loving life.  We were so blessed to have Dr. Kelly Phillips working with us with Jeebie.  I wish she was here to see the end result of all the hard work but she has relocated.  Jeebie is truly a miracle and we thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for this very special little guy.

January 4, 2010--Jeebie Update-- Our little Jeebie is doing wonderful.  He's a normal, funny, loving little Goffin, fully feathred and loving life.  He loves to fly and play with his toys.  Sometimes he'll even sit with me and sleep and let me love on him.  He says his name and step up and we're working on getting him to talk more.  He's now in a huge cage, filled with toys, and he uses every inch.  He loves playing on the bottom, on his back with his foot toys.

We have Harley, a little Bare Eyed Cockatoo that appears to be a mutilator.  He came to us with a serious leg wound where he had been chewing his leg.  We were told that he started under his wings and after that healed he went for his leg.  We are seeing a vet and Harley is taking antibiotics, pain medicine and has just been started on Prozac and just recently another medication that is a type of endorphin blocker.  Since he can't get to his legs due to the bandaging, he started biting on his feet.

Little Harley is only 2 years old and already so unhappy.  We aren't sure why but we are continuing to work with our vet to see if we can figure it out.

May 27, 2009--Harley Update---Harley has been out of his collar for about 2 weeks now.  No sign of mutilating.  He will be on his Prozac long term I'm afraid but we are going to see about weaning him off the other medication.
Harley now gets out of his cage every morning and helps me get ready for work by singing and dancing around and trying to pull my hair.  He's acting more like a Cockatoo.
June 16, 2009--Harley Update--Little Harley is doing well.  He's still out of his collar and no sign of blood or mutilating.  He's a happy little guy and loves to dance and show off his beautiful wings.  We are in the process of weaning him from one of his medications but he will stay on the Prozac, at least for now.  I think with lots of love and attention Harley is going to be alright.  He just loves chewing on cloth--anything cloth--clothes, towels, blankets, anything.  We have some pieces of cloth that we have weaved in and out of the bars on his cage and he just chews them to shreds.  Better chewing that than himself though.
July 25, 2009 Harley Update--We are so thankful that Harley has done so well.  He's out of his collar and off all medications with no signs of any further chewing.  He loves flying around the house, from his cage to the playstand and down the hallway.  He is a joy.  He talks all the time and loves to hang upside down on his toys and just scream with joy.  He's more beautiful every day.  Thank you to all who've encouraged us and kept Harley in your thoughts.  And a special thanks to Parrot Island Toys for the special toy for Harley that he just loves.
We are in the process of finding a forever home for Harley now that he is healed, healthy and happy.
October 22, 2009--Harley Update--Harley continues to do well and is loving life and flying around.  He is off all medications and no collar.  He is a joker and one of the funniest guys we have.  Everyone that comes to Dee's Haven and meets Harley just falls in love.  He can charm anyone with his cuteness.  Again, a very special thank you to Dr. Kelly Phillips for all her hard work and care.
January 4, 2010--Harley Update--Our little Harley is doing great.   He's full of life and mischief just like a Too should be.  He loves to fly around, fight with his toys and sometimes give kisses.  He's come so far and we're so proud of him.  To look at him now you'd never know there had been a problem that took almost a year to overcome.

This is Stella and Stosh.  They are mates and retired breeders.  Both are approximately 25 years old.  They will live out their lives together here at Dee's Haven.  Both are very sweet birds and love scratches and being out of the cages together.  They can't be in the same cage anymore due to a little incident where Stosh bit Stella's foot.  But they love each other and are right beside each other.

We lost Stella on Saturday, May 1, 2010.  Stella was wild caught and we estimate her age at betewen 50-70.  Her age caught up with her and she went to fly over the rainbow bridge.  We miss her a great deal as does her Stosh.  Fly free my sweet Stella.  We love you and miss you every day.

This is Al and Nora.  They came in with Stosh and Stella and are also retired breeders and mated.  They are approximately 25 years old and will live with Stosh and Stella at Dee's Haven permanently.  They are not in the same cage because when Al gets a little "hormonal" he tends to bully Nora but they are right beside each other in the room with Stosh and Stella.

Meet Gabby, a beautiful, sweet Congo African Grey.  She came with Stosh, Stella, Al and Nora and is approximately 25 years old.  Gabby talks up a storm and is funny and adorable.  Gabby is here permanently as well.

Baby is a wild caught Buffon's Macaw believed to be between 50-60 years old

Baby came in with 5 other parrots due to medical conditions in the family.

Baby is very quiet and has some nervous habits such as rocking back

and forth.  She loves her cashews and is a delight to have around.

Because of her age and critically endangered status, Baby will remain here

at Dee's Haven permanently.
